| Subject: Useful Frost Mage Macros for Beginners Tue Jan 25, 2011 4:15 am | |
| Before we get started we should cover the basics of a macro.
To open the macro menu simply type /macro.
At the bottom, click 'New' and it will prompt you to select an icon. At this point, ALWAYS select the question mark as the icon....you will see why in a moment.
Title it with something appropriate; All your macros will be arranged alphabetically.
Let's look at an example macro and its parts.
#showtooltip Counterspell /stopcasting /cast [mod:alt, target=focus, exists, nodead]; Counterspell
This is a basic macro for using Counterspell. The first line with #showtooltip 'spell' sets the icon as the spell icon and give it the tooltip that counterspell normally has if you chose the question mark as the icon. Next is /stopcasting...most of the time you want to use counterspell as quickly as possible (even when you are mid-cast) and this makes sure you cast it as fast as possible. The last line uses a modifier that is for your focus target...normally for arena. If ALT is pressed when pressing this macro, it will cast counterspell if your focus target exists and is not dead. Otherwise, it casts counterspell on your main target.
Here is a short list of some of the basic macros that beginner frost mages should use while learning to properly play.
#showtooltip Ice Block /stopcasting /cast Ice Block /cancelaura Ice Block
This casts ice block regardless what you are doing.....pressing it again cancels the ice block you are in. This is useful when you want to keep mobile but want to block an incoming spell or remove all the dots on you. It's also good for when you get mid stun lock against a rogue...so you can cancel out and catch him with a Frost Nova.
#showtooltip Counterspell /stopcasting /cast [mod:alt, target=focus, exists, nodead]; Counterspell
This one was previously explained.
#showtooltip Frostbolt /cast [mod:alt] Frostbolt(rank 1); Frostbolt
This one is a macro to put rank 1 and full rank frostbolt on the same button to save space. Personally...I have them on different binds.
#showtooltip Frost Nova /stopcasting /cast Frost Nova
Just like the others...casts Nova regardless of what you are doing.
#showtooltip /cast [nopet][target=pet, dead] Summon Water Elemental /click PetActionButton5
This macro is very useful when moving or right before a Frostbolt lands. This summons your water elemental if he is not out already.....if your pet is out and is still alive, then it will cast the elemental freeze where ever you click it to land. This is extremely useful for getting a rogue out that you just saw vanish or for freezing them after you have been stunned.
Other General Macros
/use [flyable, nomounted] Frosty Flying Carpet /use [nomounted] Traveler's Tundra Mammoth /dismount [mounted]
This macro uses the proper mount based on the mount conditions of where you are. You should be able to see the tooltip change from one mount to the other when you enter a flyable zone.
#showtooltip /cast Polymorph /p Polymorph on %t.
This macro casts polymorph like normal but it also sends a chat warning into party chat saying 'Polymorph on "current target".' This can be applied to almost any spell you want.
#showtooltip Blizzard /use 13 /stopcasting /cast Icy Veins /stopcasting /cast Blizzard
This is an example of what a macro would look like if you wanted to use a trinket and a cooldown before a spell as fast as possible. This particular one uses a trinket in the 13 slot. You can also change this type of macro for everything that has a usable effect (like rocket gloves) to cast it at the same time. Depending on your available cooldowns..you may have to press this macro a few times quickly.
